Ashland Community Preschool
Winner of the 2008 Wuzzleburg Preschool Garden Award
Ashland Community
Preschool is a Montessori-based, parent owned cooperative preschool. We use the
Montessori teaching method* to provide a stimulating and enjoyable experience
for two-and-a-half to five-year-olds.
Our organization is a volunteer, parent owned cooperative preschool. By
enrolling your child you become a working partner and member of the Ashland
Community Preschool. As a member of the co-op, you have the chance to witness
your child's preschool memories and development with your own eyes. We are
licensed with the Commonwealth of Virginia and welcome children of any race,
religion, nationality and ethnic origin.
We have two classes. One class meets meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 -
1:00 p.m. This class is generally the younger of the two, but in line with the
Montessori method, it is mixed ages and any child from 2 and 1/2 to 6 years old
may be in this class.
The second class meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 - 1:00 p.m.
There is an optional kindergarten prepatory program from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. for
those children in the class who are pre-K.
Class sizes are limited to 16 students in the two-day class and 18 students in
the three-day class. There are always 3 adults in the classroom, so ratios are
kept low.
The school is located in the Hanover Arts & Activities Center, 500 South Center
Street, Ashland, VA 23005.

*The Montessori teaching method allows self-directed learning through hands-on manipulation. The classroom is arranged to encourage the children to move freely and develop at their own pace. Children are encouraged to do and learn for themselves whenever possible. They can make choices in various learning areas: including practical life, sensorial, math, language and science. The children are continually gathering information and processing it as they utilize the materials in the classroom. This freedom within limits helps to develop self-discipline, independence, a respect for others and a love for learning.
